British Nannies and Tutors or Governesses are viewed by many families worldwide to be the best nannies available, given their professional training, previous experience and of course English language skills. The perception is also increased by the ‘Mary Poppins’ image and also more recently, television programmes such as ‘The SuperNanny’ aka Jo Frost.

Many are trained in childcare, are able to teach manners and etiquette, good vocabulary, spelling and English language. Many also have knowledge of Early Years Education and can assist with homework and language development. Some families will insist that the nanny dresses fairly formally whilst at work, whilst others take a more informal approach. The important thing to remember is that not all British Nannies follow this stereotype, and neither do all families want such a formal situation, although many do.

As a Family looking for a professional nanny or Governess we would strongly recommend that you spend a considerable amount of time deciding on the type of nanny you are actually looking for at the beginning of the process. Some of the questions below will assist, but broadly speaking:

• Would you prefer a newly qualified, young and active nanny, or a more experienced and qualified nanny who may be more education-biased, but also more likely to be committed to their own tried and tested methods, less likely sometimes to help with other aspects, or do things your way?
• Do you need a nanny with experience with younger children or one with experience with school age children instead/as well? Many nannies prefer at least one child at home all day, whilst some tutors would not consider working with children under 4 or 5.
• Do you really need the nanny or tutor to work 6 days, or would 5 good day’s work be better?
• What type of accommodation will you offer the nanny? Will it be live-in, a separate apartment, or a mix of the two?
• Will you need them to travel with you?
• Do you need a driver?

There are a great many questions to be answered, especially when the nanny or tutor is working so far from home. We have many candidates who will only work outside the UK, and have done for many years, but others who may be giving up accommodation, jobs, and leaving family to take up a role overseas, so it is important that it works from their point of view too!

As a professional nanny agency, the more information we have, the better. The more precise details we have with regards to the weekly working days and hours, your expectation of the nanny or Governess, the weekly pay on offer (or a salary band on offer), the length of time you want them, whether you need more of a teacher, or more of a nanny, whether you will need the nanny to travel with you, drive the children, liaise with schools, swim, work weekends etc. then the more chance we have of finding the most suitable candidate first time – and that is the aim in all cases!
